A Simple Checklist for the First Week of Term

Aisha PatelMarch 9, 20264 min read

The first week of a new term is rarely calm anywhere, but a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping it manageable.

Before students arrive, confirm that every new enrollment has been fully processed, including transport routes and any dietary or medical notes that were submitted over the break. It is far easier to fix a missing record before the first day than during it.

Check that class lists match what teachers are expecting, especially if there have been any late transfers or withdrawals. A mismatch here is one of the most common causes of a confusing first morning.

Send a short welcome message to parents a day or two ahead of time, covering drop off times, what to bring on the first day, and how to reach the school office if something comes up. Most of the calls a school office gets in the first week are questions that a single message could have answered in advance.

Finally, make sure your attendance and communication tools are actually ready to use, not just installed. Run through marking attendance for a single class before the term starts, so the first real use of the day is not also the first time anyone has tried it.
